Were you around in the 1990s when downtown Reno was a vibrant area of casinos and development and not pawn shops and liquor stores? Why is there so much undeveloped land in downtown Reno? When a city spends millions of dollars each year financing uncontrolled urban sprawl, it tends to spend substantially less money revitalizing its core.
In Portland, Oregon where the city has a strict urban growth boundary, the downtown area is vibrant and walkable. Undeveloped land is almost impossible to find. Reno needs to stop sprawling and spend the money on revitalizing a deteriorating downtown, among other things.
One area of concern is development along the Mount Rose Scenic Corridor. Developers working with Washoe County recently sought to take over 375 acres of our US Forest Service land for development, land that should be preserved for our children's children.
The county engaged in questionable tactics to rezone property for 632 cluster homes on Matera Ridge and increased commercial activity in the "Forest Area", inconsistent with the one home per acre horse property of the area and the scenic corridor designation. Open Space in developer-speak means "too sloped to build on.” Within weeks of the zoning change for the 632 clustered homes, the owning corporation declared bankruptcy when faced with a trustee sale.
